Don Wagerman and Mary Alice Wagerman celebrated 72 years of marriage in October 2010 at Vacaville’s Merrill Gardens with family and friends.
The couple first met in in Longmont, Co., when Don delivered a truckload of shoes to a shoe store where his brother worked. Mary was also employed there and Don asked her on an ice-skating date. A year later, the two were married on Oct. 16, 1938.
The Wagermans moved to the Richmond in 1943, where Don and Mary became Realtors, opening an office there. Don also operated numerous title insurance companies and over a 50-year period began serving in city government. He spent 16 years on Richmond’s City Council and also served as the city’s mayor for two terms during the 1970s. Don also worked on Richmond’s planning commission for nine years.
“I spent too much time in city hall,” joked Don, who retired from “everything” in 1983.
Mary and Don have three children – Dale Wagerman of Granite Bay, Dean Wagerman of Pleasanton and Sue Gibbs of Benicia – and six grandchildren and and seven great-grandchildren.
The pair moved to Vacaville 18 years ago, retiring here because it was a “friendly community.”
